Additional Notes

  • GWS, GQ, GA, GH, GS, GN and GHA are codes used to identify General Education requirements. General education courses are interchangeable; students may choose the general education course(s) they wish to take in any given semester based on preference, availability, and academic goals.
  • All incoming freshmen must take a First-Year Seminar (FYS) during Fall or Spring of their first year.
  • The University requires that students take a United States Cultures (US), an International Cultures (IL) and an Other Cultures (OC) course.  US, IL, and US;IL are codes used to designate courses that satisfy University United States/International Cultures requirements. All students are required to take one IL and one US course before graduation. A course designated as US;IL may be used as a US or an IL, not both. Most upper-level GER courses fulfill the IL requirement.  GERBA students can fulfill the US and OC requirement by selecting a US and OC course for one of their General Education classes or as an elective.
  • W/Y suffix signifies the course satisfies the University Writing Across the Curriculum requirement.
  • A natural science with lab is required.

Program Notes

  • GERBA students must complete at least 120 credits to graduate.  If a student begins the GER sequence at a higher level than GER 001, the skipped credits will need to be made up through other courses (i.e., additional electives).  GER 001, 002 and 003 are each worth 4 credits.
  • GER 302W and GER 401Y satisfy the University “Writing Across the Curriculum” requirement.  Many upper-level GER courses fulfill the "International Cultures" requirement.  For these reasons, the requirements are not listed separately.
  • Semester 6 is when most foreign language majors study abroad (although other semester and full academic-year options are possible.)  Consult with a German departmental adviser about study abroad no later than the beginning of Semester 3.
  • Scheduling patterns vary for courses according to the semester they are taught.

Legend

# Course is an Entrance-to-Major requirement.
