Additional Notes

  • GWS, GQ, GA, GH, GS, GN and GHA are codes used to identify General Education requirements. General education courses are interchangeable; students may choose the general education course(s) they wish to take in any given semester based on preference, availability, and academic goals.
  • All incoming freshmen must take a First-Year Seminar (FYS) during Fall or Spring of their first year.
  • Students must complete a 3-credit course in "United States Cultures (US)" and a 3-credit course in "International Cultures (IL)."  US, IL, and US;IL are codes used to designate courses that satisfy University United States/International Cultures requirements. All students are required to take one IL and one US course before graduation. A course designated as US;IL may be used as a US or an IL, not both.
  • W/Y suffix signifies a course satisfies the University Writing Across the Curriculum requirement.
  • A natural science with lab is required.

Program Notes

  • The GERBS Engineering Option is available to ENGR majors only as a concurrent major.
  • GERBS students must complete at least 123 credits to graduate. If a student begins the GER sequence at a higher level than GER 001, the skipped credits will need to be made up through other courses (i.e., additional electives).  GER 001, 002 and 003 are each worth 4 credits.
  • The Engineering Option requires six credits of study abroad or internship credit earned abroad (conducted in German).
  • Students pursuing the Engineering Option are required to take GER 431 or GER 432.
  • GER 302W and GER 401Y satisfy the University “Writing Across the Curriculum” requirement.  Many upper-level GER courses fulfill the "International Cultures" requirement.  For these reasons, the requirement is not listed separately.
  • Semester 6 is when most foreign language majors study abroad (although other semester and full academic-year options are possible.)  Consult with a German departmental adviser about study abroad no later than the beginning of Semester 3.
  • Scheduling patterns vary for courses according to the semester they are taught.

Legend

# Course is an Entrance-to-Major requirement.
