Additional Notes

Program Notes:
Minimum total credits is 123.

Elective courses as needed to make 123 credits.

Academic Advising Notes:

Agroecology students should change their campus location to University Park by the beginning of their fifth semester, and consult regularly with their advisor to ensure proper course selection.

Students should also take an active role in planning their course work in order to meet all requirements and to graduate in a timely manner. Keep track of your progress by reviewing your Degree Audit on eLion (https://elion.psu.edu/).

Courses offered only in the fall semester at UP: AGECO/AGRO 438, AGECO 457, AGECO 490, AGRO 028, AGRO 423, BIOL 127, BIOL 222, PPATH 405.

Courses offered only in the spring semester at UP: AGECO 201, AGRO 425, SOILS 402, BIOL 220W.

AGECO 201 introduces students to ecological principles as they relate to agriculture and will provide important concepts for upper level courses. It should be scheduled in the first spring semester at University Park.

AGECO 295 and 495 (Internship courses) are required for both options. These Internships provide an opportunity for out-of-classroom learning experience relevant to the student’s educational program. AGECO 295 (1-18 credits) may be scheduled for the 2rd, 3rd or 4th semester provided that the student has taken some agriculture and ecology related courses or has previous experience in agriculture. University Park students may schedule this class in consultation with their Agroecology adviser. Students at campuses other than University Park who have previous experience in agriculture may schedule this class in consultation with their academic adviser and with the approval of the Internship and Program Coordinator for the major. AGECO 495 (1-18 credits) is taken in the junior or senior year. At least one of these courses (AGECO 295 or 495) should include a summer on-farm experience.

Agroecology students in the Plant Science option select 14 credits of supporting courses from related area. These supporting courses provide an opportunity for students topursue an area of related study that best fits their educational and career goals and often will fulfill a minor for the students. These courses need to be planned and scheduled in consultation with the student’s academic adviser.
