Additional Notes

General education courses are interchangeable; students may choose the general education course(s) they wish to take in any given semester based on preference, availability, and academic goals.

Note:  Students enrolled in, or hoping to enroll in, majors in the College of the Liberal Arts are expected to attend the University Park campus once they have earned a total of 60 credits. No more than 91 credits earned while enrolled at another Penn State College or at another institution may be applied toward degrees granted by the College of the Liberal Arts. A minimum of 24 of the credits related to the primary area of study stipulated under “requirements for the major” must be completed at University Park. (For example, History majors must complete 24 credits of "Hist" courses at University Park.) Senior or capstone courses required for the major must be completed at University Park.

Scheduling patterns vary for courses according to the semester they are taught.

  • IT BA/Italian Studies students must complete at least 123 credits to graduate.  If a student begins the Italian sequence at a higher level than IT 001, the skipped credits will need to be made up through other courses (i.e., additional electives).  IT 001, 002 and 003 are each worth 4 cr.

  • Bold type indicates courses requiring a quality grade of C or better. GWS, GHA, GQ, GN, GA, GH, and GS are codes used to identify General Education requirements.  IT 330W satisfies the University “Writing Across the Curriculum” requirement.

  • All incoming freshmen must take a First-Year Seminar (FYS) during Fall or Spring of their first year.  Academic advisers can provide a list of FYS being offered and help the student enroll.  Most FYS in the College of the Liberal Arts are worth 3 cr. and count as a General Humanities (GH) or General Social Sciences (GS) course.  For this reason, the FYS is not listed separately on this eight-semester plan; most students will be able to fulfill the FYS requirement while also fulfilling a GH or GS requirement.

  • The University requires that students take a United States Cultures (US) and an International Cultures (IL) course.  IT BA students can fulfill these requirements by selecting a US course and an IL course for two of their Italian major requirements, two General Education classes, or as electives. Studying abroad also fulfills the IL requirement.

Updated December 2012

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

*  Most students start at level 002 or 003. Students starting at level 001 may accelerate their progress by taking intensive IT 010 and 020 instead of the IT 001-003 sequence, or enrolling in IT 001, 002 and/or 003 at University Park through the summer Language Institute.

+  Semester 5 is when most Italian majors are encouraged to study abroad (although other semester, summer  and full academic-year options are also possible.)  Students may earn up to 12 cr. toward the major during a semester abroad; for a year abroad, students should not plan for more than 18 cr. toward the major.  When preparing an application to study abroad, consult with an Italian Department adviser regarding acceptable courses at the foreign program or institution and for help with selecting courses to take at Penn State prior to going abroad.

^ The Italian Studies major requires 9 credits of 400-level work in disciplines that offer courses related to Italy.  Students should plan ahead and identify any prerequisites that are needed before enrolling in the 400-level courses.  The prerequisite courses may be used to fulfill General Education, B.A., and/or elective requirements.
