Additional Notes

General education courses are interchangeable; students may choose the general education course(s) they wish to take in any given semester based on preference, availability, and academic goals.  GWS, GHA, GQ, GN, GA, GH, and GS are codes used to identify General Education requirements.

Note: Students enrolled in, or hoping to enroll in, majors in the College of the Liberal Arts are expected to attend the University Park campus once they have earned a total of 60 credits. No more than 91 credits earned while enrolled at another Penn State College or at another institution may be applied toward degrees granted by the College of the Liberal Arts. A minimum of 24 of the credits related to the primary area of study stipulated under “requirements for the major” must be completed at University Park.  Senior or capstone courses required for the major must be completed at University Park.

Scheduling patterns vary for courses according to the semester they are taught.

Program Notes:
The Requirements for the Comparative Literature major include the following prescribed courses: CMLIT 010, CMLIT 100, CMLIT 400Y, and an additional 400 level course in CMLIT. The major also requires two courses in the same foreign language beyond the 003 level, and 18 credits in additional literature courses. These 18 credits must include a minimum of 12 credits at the 400 level and a minimum of 6 credits in Comparative Literature courses. Up to 12 credits may be taken in other departments (e.g. English, other language). These must be literature courses (not creative writing, culture, etc.) Students are advised to consider prerequisites for advanced English literature courses when selecting their General Education Humanities courses.

Up to 12 credits toward the major requirements may be counted from an education abroad program with departmental approval.

All incoming freshmen must take a First Year Seminar (FYS) during fall or spring of their first year. Most FYSs in the College of the Liberal Arts are 3 credits and count as a General Education Humanities (GH) or General Education Social Sciences (GS) course.

All students must take a United States Cultures (US) and an International Cultures (IL) course. CMLIT 400Y required of all Comparative Literature majors satisfies the US requirement. CMLIT 010 and CMLIT 100 satisfy the IL requirement.

All students must complete at least one 3 credit WRITING INTENSIVE course. CMLIT 400Y required of all Comparative Literature majors satisfies this requirement.

CMLIT majors must complete at least 123 credits to graduate. If a student begins the foreign language sequence at a higher level than level 001, the skipped credits will need to be made up through other courses (i.e., additional electives).
At least one Natural Science course must be a laboratory course.
