Additional Notes

General education courses are interchangeable; students may choose the general education course(s) they wish to take in any given semester based on preference, availability, and academic goals.  GWS, GHA, GQ, GN, GA, GH, and GS are codes used to identify General Education requirements.

All incoming freshmen must take a First Year Seminar (FYS) during fall or spring of their first year. Most FYSs in the College of the Liberal Arts are 3 credits and count as a General Education Humanities (GH) or General Education Social Sciences (GS) course.

Note: Students enrolled in, or hoping to enroll in, majors in the College of the Liberal Arts are expected to attend the University Park campus once they have earned a total of 60 credits. No more than 91 credits earned while enrolled at another Penn State College or at another institution may be applied toward degrees granted by the College of the Liberal Arts. A minimum of 24 of the credits related to the primary area of study stipulated under “requirements for the major” must be completed at University Park.  Senior or capstone courses required for the major must be completed at University Park.

Scheduling patterns vary for courses according to the semester they are taught.

Program Notes:
The Requirements for the Global and International Studies B.S. major include the following prescribed courses: GLIS 101, GLIS 102, and GLIS 400. The major also requires two courses in quantitative skills: MATH 021 (GQ), and a statistics course (choose STAT 100, STAT 200, SOC 207, or PSYCH 200). In addition, students must complete 21 credits in two or more Options using the list of approved Option courses (see http://glis.la.psu.edu/major/requirements). Of these 21 credits, 15 credits should be in one Option and the remaining 9 credits should be in one or more other Options.  A total of 12 credits under the Option requirements must be taken at the 400 level. Students are advised to consider prerequisites for the 400-level Option courses when selecting their General Education and lower level Option courses. Finally, students in the B.S. version of this major must complete 21 credits in an approved related area, with at least 6 of those credits at the 400 level.

All students at Penn State must take a United States Cultures (US) and an International Cultures (IL) course.  These courses are allowed to overlap (i.e. double-count) with General Education or major courses.  All students must also complete at least one three-credit WRITING INTENSIVE course, designated with a W or Y course number suffix.

This major requires at least 120 credits to graduate.
