Additional Notes

General education courses are interchangeable; students may choose the general education course(s) they wish to take in any given semester based on preference, availability, and academic goals.

Note:  Students enrolled in, or hoping to enroll in, majors in the College of the Liberal Arts are expected to attend the University Park campus once they have earned a total of 60 credits. No more than 91 credits earned while enrolled at another Penn State College or at another institution may be applied toward degrees granted by the College of the Liberal Arts. A minimum of 24 of the credits related to the primary area of study stipulated under “requirements for the major” must be completed at University Park. (For example, History majors must complete 24 credits of "Hist" courses at University Park.) Senior or capstone courses required for the major must be completed at University Park.

Scheduling patterns vary for courses according to the semester they are taught.

- SPNBA students must complete at least 123 credits to graduate.  If a student begins the Spanish sequence at a higher level than SPAN 001, the skipped credits will need to be made up through other courses (i.e., additional electives).  SPAN 001, 002 and 003 are each worth 4 cr.
- GWS, GHA, GQ, GN, GA, GH, and GS are codes used to identify General Education requirements.  SPAN 253W satisfies the University “Writing Across the Curriculum” requirement.
- All incoming freshmen must take a First-Year Seminar (FYS) during Fall or Spring of their first year.  Academic advisers can provide a list of FYS being offered and help the student enroll.  Most FYS in the College of the Liberal Arts are worth 3 cr. and count as a General Humanities (GH) or General Social Sciences (GS) course.  For this reason, the FYS is not listed separately on this eight-semester plan; most students will be able to fulfill the FYS requirement while also fulfilling a GH or GS requirement.
- The University requires that students take a United States Cultures (US) and an International Cultures (IL) course.  SPNBA students can fulfill these requirements by selecting a US course and an IL course for two of their General Education classes or as electives. Studying abroad also fulfills the IL requirement.

* Semester 6 is when most Spanish majors study abroad (although other semester and full academic-year options are also possible.) Study abroad is not required for this major; however, it is highly encouraged. It is possible to earn up to 15 cr. toward the major during a semester abroad; for a year abroad, students should not plan for more than 18 cr. toward the major.  When preparing an application to study abroad, consult with the Spanish Department’s study abroad adviser regarding acceptable courses at the foreign program or institution and for help with selecting courses to take at Penn State prior to going abroad.
